Ultrasound Technician Work Description

Kingston OH ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Kingston OH clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily work tasks of a sonogram tech can involve:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must frequently assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Available

Kingston OH ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to complete. Another option for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many colleges set up through Kingston OH hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Ohio or whatever state you elect to work in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Kingston OHAs previously mentioned, nearly all sonogram tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus facility. Practical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Kingston OH hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the rest of the training and classes may be attended online in your Kingston home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are often more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be decreased also. But just as with any ultrasound tech school you are reviewing, verify that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Kingston OH ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Kingston OH area. Of course location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional variables that you should also take into account, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? Most sonogram tech schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive review of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Kingston OH employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the ultrasound technician programs you are evaluating have relationships with Kingston OH clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to get hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist graduates and students form professional connections in the Kingston healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Ask if the sonographer schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Ohio healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they select will have to be within driving distance of their Kingston OH residence. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Kingston OH area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
