Sonogram Tech Occupation Description

Findlay OH ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Findlay OH hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily job duties of an ultrasound technician may involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Offered

Findlay OH ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take around 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finalize. Another option for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that most sonographer colleges do have a clinical training component as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many schools set up with Findlay OH clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in Ohio or whatever state you choose to work in.

Online Sonographer Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Findlay OHAs aforementioned, nearly all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus facility. Clinical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Findlay OH hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the remainder of the classes and training can be attended online in your Findlay home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online programs are many times more affordable than on campus alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be reduced also. But just as with any sonographer program you are reviewing, make sure that the online program you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Findlay OH ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Findlay OH area. Naturally location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier also. But there are other factors that you should also take into consideration, such as if the programs are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician schools have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Findlay OH health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound tech schools you are interested in have partnerships with Findlay OH hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to get practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Findlay health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the sonographer programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Ohio healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they pick will need to be within commuting distance of their Findlay OH home. Those who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Findlay OH area, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.

Findlay is a city in and the county seat of Hancock County, Ohio, United States.[6] The city metro area is often referred as The Greater Findlay Area. The second-largest city in Northwest Ohio, Findlay lies about 40 miles (64 km) south of Toledo. The population was 41,202 at the 2010 census. It is home to the University of Findlay. Findlay is one of two cities in Hancock County, along with Fostoria.

In the War of 1812, Colonel James Findlay of Cincinnati built a road and a stockade to transport and shelter troops in the Great Black Swamp region. This stockade was named Fort Findlay in his honor.[7][8] At the conclusion of the war, the community of Findlay was born. The first town lots were laid out in 1821 by the future Ohio Governor Joseph Vance and Elnathan Corry.

Findlay hosted the highly competitive Ohio State Music Festival in 1884. A young cornet player, Warren G. Harding, and his Citizens' Cornet Band of Marion placed third in the competition.[9] Harding would go on to be elected the 29th President of the United States.
