They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Cedarville OH hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work duties of an ultrasound tech can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure

  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort

  • Evaluating results and determining need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Available

Cedarville OH ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete. Another alternative for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that most sonographer schools do have a practical training element as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many colleges organize with Cedarville OH clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in Ohio or whichever state you decide to work in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Cedarville OHAs previously mentioned, virtually all ultrasound technician schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at an authorized off-campus facility. Clinical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Cedarville OH hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the balance of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Cedarville home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are frequently less costly than on-campus options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be decreased as well. But just as with any sonographer program you are considering, check that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal choice for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

Questions to ask Cedarville OH ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Cedarville OH area. Of course location will be critical if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional things that you must also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you need ask each sonography college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Cedarville OH employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are evaluating have associations with Cedarville OH hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to obtain hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Cedarville health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Ohio healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they pick will have to be within commuting distance of their Cedarville OH home. Students who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Cedarville OH area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
