Sonogram Tech Job Summary

Brecksville OH ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Brecksville OH hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job duties of a sonogram tech can consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

Brecksville OH ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require around 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finish. Another option for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many colleges set up through Brecksville OH clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in Ohio or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Schools

student attending online sonography class in Brecksville OHAs aforementioned, virtually all ultrasound tech colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus facility. Practical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Brecksville OH hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the remainder of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Brecksville home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times less expensive than traditional options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But similarly as with any sonography school you are looking at, make sure that the online program you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal option for you.

Topics to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Brecksville OH ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of assessing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Brecksville OH area. Certainly location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification also. But there are other variables that you should also take into account, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? Most ultrasound technician colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still crucial to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed review of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Brecksville OH health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Provided? Find out if the ultrasound technician programs you are interested in have partnerships with Brecksville OH clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to obtain hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Brecksville health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the sonographer programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Ohio healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they choose will have to be within driving distance of their Brecksville OH home. Those who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Brecksville OH area, check that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.

    Brecksville, Ohio

Brecksville was founded in 1811, four years after several men — including Colonel John Breck — purchased the surrounding area. After the land was surveyed, Seth Payne, one of the surveyors, brought his family and settled in the area in June 1811, and he was soon followed by many other families. Although Colonel Breck never lived in Brecksville, his three sons did, and members of his family continued to live in Brecksville until 1934, when his great-grandson Dr. Theodore Breck died. A comprehensive early historical account of Brecksville was written by William R. Coates and published by The American Historical Society in 1924.[8]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 19.68 square miles (50.97 km2), of which 19.57 square miles (50.69 km2) is land and 0.11 square miles (0.28 km2) is water.[3] Brecksville's eastern border is traversed by the Cuyahoga River and borders Sagamore Hills Township and Boston Township, southern border Richfield Township (all three townships in Summit County), western border Broadview Heights and northern border Independence.

Brecksville is defined by its scenic wooded bluffs and ravines which are a result of the geological confluence of the Glaciated Allegheny Plateau and the Great Lakes Basin. Many neighborhoods are adjacent to the Brecksville Reservation[11] of the Cleveland Metroparks and the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, one of the most visited National Parks in the country.[12][13] The Brecksville Reservation consists of 2,500 acres.
