Ultrasound Technician Work Description

Berkey OH ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Berkey OH hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily job duties of an ultrasound tech can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for further testing

Sonographers must regularly gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Available

Berkey OH ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to complete. Another alternative for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training element as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many schools organize with Berkey OH clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Ohio or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Online Sonographer Schools

student attending online sonography class in Berkey OHAs previously mentioned, almost all sonogram technician schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off-campus facility. Practical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Berkey OH hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the rest of the classes and training may be attended online in your Berkey home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online programs are often more affordable than on-campus options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be reduced as well. But just as with every sonographer school you are reviewing, check that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the right option for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Berkey OH ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Berkey OH area. Of course location will be important if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are other things that you should also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? Most sonogram technician colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed review of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Berkey OH health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the sonogram technician schools you are reviewing have relationships with Berkey OH hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to obtain hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist students and graduates form professional connections in the Berkey healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Ohio healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they select will need to be within travelling distance of their Berkey OH home. Those who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  program you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Berkey OH area, verify that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
