Sonogram Tech Occupation Summary

South Heart ND ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in South Heart ND clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job duties of a sonogram tech may consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for further testing

Sonographers must routinely assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

South Heart ND ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that almost all sonographer schools do have a practical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools sponsor with South Heart ND hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in North Dakota or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Sonographer Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in South Heart NDAs previously mentioned, nearly all sonogram tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local South Heart ND outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the rest of the classes and training may be attended online in your South Heart home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are often less costly than traditional alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be decreased also. But similarly as with every sonographer school you are reviewing, verify that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

Clearly location will be important if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier also. But there are other things that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you need ask each sonography school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many South Heart ND health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound technician schools you are reviewing have partnerships with South Heart ND clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to get hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional connections in the South Heart healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Find out if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with North Dakota healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they select will need to be within travelling distance of their South Heart ND residence. Those who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the South Heart ND area, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
