Ultrasound Technician Work Description

Teachey NC ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Teachey NC clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work duties of an ultrasound technician may consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for further testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

Teachey NC ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to complete. Another alternative for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many colleges organize through Teachey NC hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in North Carolina or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Schools

student attending online sonography class in Teachey NCAs earlier discussed, virtually all ultrasound technician colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Teachey NC hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the rest of the training and classes can be attended online in your Teachey home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online schools are frequently less costly than on-campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be decreased also. But similarly as with every sonography college you are looking at, check that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal choice for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

Questions to ask Teachey NC ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you will attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Teachey NC area. Obviously location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification also. But there are additional factors that you must also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Teachey NC employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound tech schools you are evaluating have relationships with Teachey NC hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to get practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Teachey health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with North Carolina healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they choose will need to be within driving distance of their Teachey NC home. Students who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Teachey NC area, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
