Ultrasound Tech Work Summary

Powellsville NC ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Powellsville NC hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily work duties of a sonogram tech can include:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Available

Powellsville NC ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require around 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finish. Another option for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that almost all sonographer schools do have a clinical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges organize through Powellsville NC clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in North Carolina or whatever state you elect to work in.

Online Sonographer Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Powellsville NCAs aforementioned, nearly all ultrasound technician schools have a practical component to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus facility. Clinical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Powellsville NC outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the balance of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Powellsville home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online programs are often less expensive than on-campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be reduced as well. But similarly as with every sonographer program you are looking at, make sure that the online program you choose is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the right choice for you.

Topics to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Powellsville NC ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you will access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Powellsville NC area. Of course location will be important if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional things that you must also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? Most sonogram technician colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous review of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Powellsville NC employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the ultrasound technician programs you are reviewing have associations with Powellsville NC hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to get practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Powellsville medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with North Carolina healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they choose will have to be within travelling distance of their Powellsville NC residence. Those who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  college you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Powellsville NC area, check that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
