Sonographer Occupation Description

Ivanhoe NC ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Ivanhoe NC hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily work functions of a sonogram tech may consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Something to bear in mind is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor through Ivanhoe NC clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in North Carolina or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Practical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Ivanhoe NC hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the balance of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Ivanhoe home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online programs are many times more affordable than on-campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting may be lessened as well. But just as with any sonographer school you are reviewing, verify that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

Questions to ask Ivanhoe NC ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Ivanhoe NC area. Naturally location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are other things that you must also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous review of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Ivanhoe NC health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are evaluating have relationships with Ivanhoe NC hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to obtain practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Ivanhoe health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with North Carolina healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they decide on will have to be within commuting distance of their Ivanhoe NC residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  program you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Ivanhoe NC area, check that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
