Ultrasound Technician Occupation Summary

Gulf NC ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Gulf NC clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily work functions of a sonogram technician can include:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Available

Gulf NC ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another option for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools organize with Gulf NC hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in North Carolina or whichever state you decide to work in.

Sonographer Online Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Gulf NCAs previously mentioned, virtually all ultrasound tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off campus facility. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Gulf NC hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the remainder of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Gulf home. This is especially beneficial for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are often less costly than traditional alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be reduced also. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech college you are looking at, make sure that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the right option for you.

Points to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Gulf NC ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of reviewing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Gulf NC area. Of course location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are other variables that you must also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you need ask each sonography school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Gulf NC employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the ultrasound tech colleges you are reviewing have partnerships with Gulf NC clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to receive practical experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional connections in the Gulf medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with North Carolina healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they pick will have to be within commuting distance of their Gulf NC home. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  college you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Gulf NC area, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
