Claremont NC sonographer performing ultrasoundNow that you have made a decision to pursue an ultrasound technician degree near Claremont NC, the next step is to begin the process of selecting a college. To begin with, you have to find the right program that will provide the appropriate education to become a qualified professional. And given that some states do mandate that sonographers be either licensed or certified, depending on where you will practice you may also need preparation to pass a licensing or certification examination. So it’s very important that you investigate each school in order to assess and compare your choices. But exactly where does one begin? Many students will begin by searching for colleges that are within driving distance of their homes and then by comparing tuition. Certainly location and cost must be taken into account when making a decision, but there are additional important factors as well. For instance, if the ultrasound technician schools are accredited or if they offer internships. These and other qualifiers will be discussed more in detail later in this post. But to start with, let’s review what an ultrasound tech does and the credentials and online education options that are available.

Ultrasound Technician Occupation Summary

Claremont NC ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Claremont NC clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work duties of a sonogram tech may involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Available

Claremont NC ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete. Another alternative for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that almost all sonographer colleges do have a practical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor with Claremont NC clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in North Carolina or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Sonogram Tech Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Claremont NCAs aforementioned, nearly all sonogram technician colleges have a practical component to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Claremont NC outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the rest of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Claremont home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online schools are often more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be decreased as well. But similarly as with every sonographer college you are considering, make sure that the online program you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the right option for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Claremont NC ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Claremont NC area. Of course location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional variables that you should also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous examination of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Claremont NC health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the sonogram technician schools you are interested in have partnerships with Claremont NC clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to receive practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist students and graduates form professional relationships in the Claremont health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with North Carolina healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they select will need to be within travelling distance of their Claremont NC home. Those who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  college you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Claremont NC area, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.
