Ultrasound Technician Work Summary

Black Creek NC ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Black Creek NC hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily work functions of a sonogram technician may involve:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

Black Creek NC ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that most sonographer colleges do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many schools set up with Black Creek NC clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in North Carolina or whichever state you choose to work in.

Online Sonographer Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Black Creek NCAs aforementioned, almost all ultrasound tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus facility. Practical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Black Creek NC outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the rest of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Black Creek home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online programs are often less costly than on-campus options. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be decreased as well. But similarly as with any sonographer program you are considering, make sure that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the right option for you.

Points to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Black Creek NC ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You may first want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Black Creek NC area. Certainly location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification also. But there are additional things that you must also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Black Creek NC health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have relationships with Black Creek NC clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to receive hands on training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Black Creek healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the sonographer programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with North Carolina healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they pick will need to be within travelling distance of their Black Creek NC residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Black Creek NC area, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
