Ultrasound Tech Occupation Summary

Bailey NC ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Bailey NC hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work duties of an ultrasound tech can include:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must frequently evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Offered

Bailey NC ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that the majority of sonographer schools do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many colleges organize with Bailey NC hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in North Carolina or whichever state you decide to work in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Bailey NCAs aforementioned, virtually all sonogram tech schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Bailey NC hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the rest of the training and classes may be attended online in your Bailey home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are frequently less expensive than on campus alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be reduced as well. But just as with any ultrasound tech program you are considering, confirm that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Bailey NC ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Bailey NC area. Of course location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional factors that you should also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Bailey NC health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the sonogram technician programs you are reviewing have partnerships with Bailey NC clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to obtain practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may assist students and graduates develop professional connections in the Bailey health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Ask if the sonographer programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with North Carolina healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they pick will need to be within driving distance of their Bailey NC residence. Those who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  college you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Bailey NC area, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
