Ultrasound Technician Work Summary

Yorktown Heights NY ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Yorktown Heights NY hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job functions of an ultrasound technician can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Available

Yorktown Heights NY ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take around 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finish. Another alternative for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous schools sponsor through Yorktown Heights NY clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in New York or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Yorktown Heights NYAs aforementioned, nearly all sonogram technician schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Yorktown Heights NY hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the rest of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Yorktown Heights home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are frequently less expensive than traditional options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be lessened as well. But similarly as with any sonography school you are reviewing, make sure that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal choice for you.

Topics to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Yorktown Heights NY ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of assessing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Yorktown Heights NY area. Obviously location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier also. But there are additional things that you should also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Yorktown Heights NY health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the sonogram technician programs you are evaluating have associations with Yorktown Heights NY hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to receive hands on training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Yorktown Heights medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without help. Find out if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with New York healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Yorktown Heights NY home. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  program you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Yorktown Heights NY area, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
