Sonogram Tech Job Description

Worcester NY ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Worcester NY clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work functions of an ultrasound technician can include:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must frequently gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Offered

Worcester NY ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take about 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that most ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training element as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools sponsor with Worcester NY clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in New York or whichever state you choose to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Schools

student attending online sonography class in Worcester NYAs aforementioned, virtually all sonogram tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Worcester NY hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the rest of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Worcester home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be lessened also. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech college you are reviewing, check that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the right option for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

Questions to ask Worcester NY ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Worcester NY area. Naturally location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification also. But there are other things that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? Most ultrasound tech colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed review of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Worcester NY health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the ultrasound tech colleges you are reviewing have partnerships with Worcester NY clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to get hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Worcester medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with New York healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they choose will need to be within commuting distance of their Worcester NY home. Those who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the sonographer  school you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Worcester NY area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
