Ultrasound Technician Occupation Description

Van Etten NY ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Van Etten NY clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily job duties of a sonogram tech may include:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must frequently assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Available

Van Etten NY ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve about 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to complete. Another alternative for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that almost all sonographer programs do have a clinical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges set up with Van Etten NY clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in New York or whatever state you choose to work in.

Sonographer Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Van Etten NYAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off campus facility. Clinical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Van Etten NY hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the balance of the classes and training can be attended online in your Van Etten home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online schools are many times more affordable than traditional alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But similarly as with every sonography school you are reviewing, make sure that the online program you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal option for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Van Etten NY ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Van Etten NY area. Certainly location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are other things that you must also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are a few questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous examination of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Van Etten NY health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the sonogram tech programs you are interested in have partnerships with Van Etten NY clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to obtain hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Van Etten healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with New York healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they decide on will have to be within driving distance of their Van Etten NY home. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Van Etten NY area, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
