Ultrasound Tech Work Description

South Colton NY ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in South Colton NY clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily job duties of a sonogram tech may include:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Available

South Colton NY ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require around 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finish. Another option for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that almost all sonographer colleges do have a clinical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous schools organize with South Colton NY clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in New York or whatever state you decide to work in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in South Colton NYAs previously mentioned, nearly all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local South Colton NY outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the remainder of the classes and training can be accessed online in your South Colton home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online colleges are often less expensive than on-campus options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be decreased also. But just as with any ultrasound tech college you are reviewing, verify that the online school you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal choice for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask South Colton NY ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a college campus in the South Colton NY area. Certainly location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier also. But there are additional variables that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are some questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive review of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many South Colton NY employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the ultrasound tech colleges you are evaluating have associations with South Colton NY clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to obtain hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional relationships in the South Colton health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Ask if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with New York healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they decide on will need to be within commuting distance of their South Colton NY residence. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the South Colton NY area, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
