Sonographer Work Summary

Sabael NY ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Sabael NY hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job functions of an ultrasound tech may consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for further testing

Sonographers must routinely gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Offered

Sabael NY ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take around 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many colleges sponsor with Sabael NY hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in New York or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Sonogram Tech Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Sabael NYAs previously mentioned, almost all ultrasound technician schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Sabael NY outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the rest of the training and classes can be attended online in your Sabael home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online schools are frequently less costly than traditional alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be decreased also. But just as with every sonography college you are considering, check that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Sabael NY ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Sabael NY area. Clearly location will be significant if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are other variables that you must also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Sabael NY employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are evaluating have partnerships with Sabael NY clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to receive practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Sabael medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with New York healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they decide on will need to be within commuting distance of their Sabael NY residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the sonographer  school you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Sabael NY area, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
