Ultrasound Technician Job Description

Redwood NY ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Redwood NY clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job functions of an ultrasound tech may involve:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must routinely assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Available

Redwood NY ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that most sonographer schools do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many colleges organize with Redwood NY clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in New York or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Redwood NYAs aforementioned, virtually all sonogram tech schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus facility. Clinical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Redwood NY outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the balance of the training and classes may be attended online in your Redwood home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online colleges are many times less costly than traditional alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be reduced as well. But just as with every sonographer college you are reviewing, confirm that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Redwood NY ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Redwood NY area. Obviously location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification also. But there are additional things that you should also take into account, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are a few questions that you need ask each sonography college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Redwood NY employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the sonogram tech programs you are assessing have relationships with Redwood NY hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to obtain hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Redwood healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be challenging without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with New York healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they pick will need to be within travelling distance of their Redwood NY residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  school you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Redwood NY area, confirm that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.

New York State Route 287 (1970s)

New York State Route 287 (NY 287) was a state highway within the town of Alexandria in Jefferson County, New York, in the United States. The route served as a connector between NY 283 southeast of Alexandria Bay in the hamlet of Browns Corners and NY 37 in the hamlet of Redwood. It was 3 miles (5 km) long and passed through open fields for most of its length.

NY 287 was originally designated as part of NY 3 in 1924. In 1930, NY 3 was rerouted east of Watertown to follow a more southerly routing across the North Country. The Browns Corners–Redwood portion of its former alignment was redesignated as New York State Route 26B by the following year. NY 26, NY 26B's parent route, was truncated southward in the on July 1, 1977; as a result, NY 26B was redesignated as NY 287. In 1979, ownership and maintenance of NY 287 was transferred from the state of New York to Jefferson County as part of a highway maintenance swap between the two levels of government. The route is now designated as County Route 192 (CR 192).

NY 287 began at an intersection with NY 283 southeast of Alexandria Bay in Browns Corners, a hamlet within the town of Alexandria. It headed southeast from the small community and gradually curved to the northeast as it proceeded through large, cultivated fields in an isolated portion of Jefferson County. West of Redwood, NY 287 had only four intersections with other highways, two of which were for a local road that began and ended at the state highway.[4][5]
