Sonogram Tech Job Summary

Ouaquaga NY ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Ouaquaga NY clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work tasks of a sonogram tech may involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Available

Ouaquaga NY ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally require about 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finish. Another alternative for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that almost all sonographer schools do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many colleges organize through Ouaquaga NY hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in New York or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Schools

student attending online sonography class in Ouaquaga NYAs earlier discussed, nearly all ultrasound technician schools have a practical component to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Ouaquaga NY outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the balance of the training and classes can be attended online in your Ouaquaga home. This is especially convenient for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online programs are frequently more affordable than on campus alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be decreased also. But just as with any ultrasound tech college you are reviewing, confirm that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Ouaquaga NY ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Ouaquaga NY area. Obviously location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier also. But there are additional variables that you should also take into account, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Ouaquaga NY health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the sonogram technician colleges you are evaluating have partnerships with Ouaquaga NY hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific manner to obtain hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may assist graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Ouaquaga medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with New York healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they select will have to be within driving distance of their Ouaquaga NY residence. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  school you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Ouaquaga NY area, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
