Sonographer Work Summary

Lawrence NY ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Lawrence NY clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work tasks of a sonogram tech can include:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Offered

Lawrence NY ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require about 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to complete. Another alternative for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many colleges organize with Lawrence NY clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in New York or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Lawrence NYAs previously mentioned, virtually all sonogram technician schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Lawrence NY outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the balance of the training and classes may be attended online in your Lawrence home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online schools are frequently less costly than on campus options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be decreased also. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech college you are considering, verify that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Lawrence NY ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Lawrence NY area. Clearly location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are additional things that you should also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive review of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Lawrence NY health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are evaluating have partnerships with Lawrence NY hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to get hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Lawrence healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without help. Find out if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with New York healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Lawrence NY home. Students who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Lawrence NY area, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family obligations.

    St. Lawrence County, New York

St. Lawrence County is a county in the U.S. state of New York. As of the 2010 census, the population was 111,944.[1] The county seat is Canton.[2] The county is named for the Saint Lawrence River, which in turn was named for the Christian saint Lawrence of Rome, on whose Feast day the river was discovered by French explorer Jacques Cartier.

When counties were established in New York State in 1683, the present St. Lawrence County was part of Albany County. This was an enormous territory, including the northern part of New York State as well as all of the present State of Vermont and, in theory, extending westward to the Pacific Ocean. The county was reduced in size on July 3, 1766 by the creation of Cumberland County, and further on March 16, 1770 by the creation of Gloucester County, both containing territory now in Vermont.

On March 12, 1772, what was left of Albany County was split into three parts, one remaining under the name Albany County. The other two were called Tryon County (later renamed Montgomery County) and Charlotte County (later renamed Washington County). Tryon County contained the western portion (and, since no western boundary was specified, theoretically extended west to the Pacific). The eastern boundary of Tryon County was approximately five miles west of the present city of Schenectady, and the county included the western part of the Adirondack Mountains and the area west of the West Branch of the Delaware River. The area then designated as Tryon County includes what are now 37 counties of New York State. The county was named for William Tryon, colonial governor of New York. Charlotte County contained the eastern portion of Albany County.
