Honeoye NY ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Honeoye NY clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work functions of an ultrasound tech can consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure

  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Offered

Honeoye NY ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that most sonographer schools do have a practical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges set up with Honeoye NY hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in New York or whichever state you decide to work in.

Online Sonographer Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Honeoye NYAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at an authorized off-campus facility. Practical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Honeoye NY hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the rest of the classes and training can be attended online in your Honeoye home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online colleges are many times less expensive than traditional alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting can be decreased as well. But just as with any sonography program you are considering, make sure that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Honeoye NY ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Honeoye NY area. Of course location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier also. But there are additional variables that you must also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound technician schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Honeoye NY health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the ultrasound tech colleges you are interested in have relationships with Honeoye NY clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to receive practical training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Honeoye healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the sonographer programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with New York healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they choose will have to be within commuting distance of their Honeoye NY home. Students who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  college you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Honeoye NY area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
