Sonogram Tech Work Summary

Ellenburg NY ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Ellenburg NY clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work tasks of an ultrasound tech can include:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Available

Ellenburg NY ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that almost all sonographer colleges do have a practical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges organize with Ellenburg NY clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in New York or whichever state you elect to work in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Ellenburg NYAs previously mentioned, almost all ultrasound technician schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus facility. Practical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Ellenburg NY outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the balance of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Ellenburg home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times more affordable than traditional alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials may be lessened as well. But just as with every ultrasound tech program you are looking at, confirm that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Ellenburg NY ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of reviewing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Ellenburg NY area. Obviously location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are other factors that you should also take into account, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Ellenburg NY employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the sonogram technician programs you are interested in have partnerships with Ellenburg NY clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to get hands on training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Ellenburg healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with New York healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will have to be within travelling distance of their Ellenburg NY residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  school you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Ellenburg NY area, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.

    Ellenburg, New York

Ellenburg is a town in Clinton County, New York, United States. The population was 1,743 at the 2010 census.[3] The town is named after the daughter of the principal proprietor. Ellenburg is on the west border of the county and is northwest of Plattsburgh. The south part of the town is in the Adirondack Park.

During the Cold War, Ellenburg was the location of two of the twelve Atlas ICBM missile silos under the 556th Strategic Missile Squadron based out of the Plattsburgh Air Force Base. These silos were operational from 1962-1965.

In late 2004, a wind farm was proposed by Noble Environmental Power for the northern part of the town. Construction was expected to be completed by early 2007, but due to delays it began in the spring of 2008. Noble has also built wind farms in the neighboring towns of Altona and Chateaugay. Construction of the wind farms caused some controversy within the towns as many residents felt it would subtract from the natural beauty of the area. The wind farm includes 54 turbines producing a total output of 81 megawatts.
