Ultrasound Tech Work Summary

Darien Center NY ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Darien Center NY clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work functions of an ultrasound tech may involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Offered

Darien Center NY ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve about 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finalize. Another option for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that the majority of sonographer schools do have a practical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous schools organize with Darien Center NY hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in New York or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Online Sonographer Schools

student attending online sonography class in Darien Center NYAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram technician schools have a practical component to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Darien Center NY hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the remainder of the training and classes can be attended online in your Darien Center home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online programs are frequently less expensive than on campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting can be decreased as well. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech college you are looking at, confirm that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the right option for you.

Questions to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Darien Center NY ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Darien Center NY area. Certainly location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional factors that you should also take into consideration, such as if the schools are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed review of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Darien Center NY health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Provided? Find out if the sonogram tech colleges you are evaluating have relationships with Darien Center NY hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Darien Center health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with New York healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they choose will need to be within driving distance of their Darien Center NY residence. Students who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  college you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Darien Center NY area, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
