Croton On Hudson NY ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Croton On Hudson NY clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job functions of a sonogram technician can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort

Ultrasound techs must frequently gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Available

Croton On Hudson NY ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finalize. Another option for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that most sonographer colleges do have a practical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many colleges sponsor with Croton On Hudson NY clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in New York or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Classes

student attending online sonography class in Croton On Hudson NYAs previously mentioned, virtually all ultrasound tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Croton On Hudson NY outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the balance of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Croton On Hudson home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online programs are frequently less costly than on-campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting can be lessened as well. But just as with any sonographer school you are considering, check that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Croton On Hudson NY ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You may first want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Croton On Hudson NY area. Obviously location will be important if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other factors that you must also take into account, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous examination of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Croton On Hudson NY employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the sonogram tech colleges you are interested in have associations with Croton On Hudson NY clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to receive hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates form professional connections in the Croton On Hudson medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the sonographer schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with New York healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they pick will have to be within commuting distance of their Croton On Hudson NY residence. Students who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  program you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Croton On Hudson NY area, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.

    Croton-on-Hudson, New York

Croton-on-Hudson is a village in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 8,070 at the 2010 census.[2] It is located in the town of Cortlandt as part of New York City's northern suburbs. The village was incorporated in 1898.

People lived from at latest about 7000 BC[3] in what would become the village.[4] The Kitchawanc tribe, part of the Wappinger Confederacy of the Algonquian peoples, signed a peace treaty with the newly arriving Dutch people at Croton Point in 1645, now commemorated by a plaque in the park there.

Stephanus van Cortlandt began acquiring land in the area in 1677 (the year he became mayor of New York City) to create a manor. It was granted by royal patent in 1697 as the Manor of Cortlandt, including the area known as Croton Landing where the Croton River meets the Hudson River, where the manor house was built. A 1718 census reports 91 inhabitants including Dutch settlers and English Quakers. People worked the manor primarily as farmers or millers.
