Ultrasound Tech Work Description

Cedarhurst NY ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Cedarhurst NY clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily work functions of a sonogram tech may include:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Available

Cedarhurst NY ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to complete. Another option for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that almost all ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many schools sponsor with Cedarhurst NY hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in New York or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Sonogram Tech Online Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Cedarhurst NYAs previously mentioned, nearly all sonogram tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off campus facility. Practical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Cedarhurst NY hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the balance of the classes and training may be attended online in your Cedarhurst home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online programs are often less costly than traditional alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting may be reduced also. But just as with any ultrasound tech school you are reviewing, check that the online program you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the right option for you.

Questions to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Cedarhurst NY ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Cedarhurst NY area. Of course location will be significant if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional things that you must also take into consideration, such as if the programs are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed review of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Cedarhurst NY health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the sonogram tech colleges you are evaluating have partnerships with Cedarhurst NY clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to receive hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates form professional connections in the Cedarhurst healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with New York healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they select will need to be within commuting distance of their Cedarhurst NY home. Those who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Cedarhurst NY area, check that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
