Ultrasound Tech Job Description

Candor NY ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Candor NY clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work tasks of a sonogram technician may include:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Available

Candor NY ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take around 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that the majority of sonographer schools do have a clinical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools organize through Candor NY hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in New York or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Sonogram Tech Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Candor NYAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound tech schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus facility. Practical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Candor NY outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the balance of the training and classes can be attended online in your Candor home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online schools are often less costly than on campus options. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be lessened as well. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech college you are looking at, verify that the online program you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

Questions to ask Candor NY ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you will attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Candor NY area. Naturally location will be significant if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional factors that you should also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician schools have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Candor NY health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the ultrasound technician colleges you are reviewing have partnerships with Candor NY clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to obtain hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may assist students and graduates establish professional connections in the Candor medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with New York healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Candor NY residence. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  program you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Candor NY area, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
