Sonographer Job Summary

Brewster NY ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Brewster NY clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily work functions of a sonogram tech can include:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Available

Brewster NY ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve about 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many schools sponsor through Brewster NY clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in New York or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Sonogram Tech Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Brewster NYAs aforementioned, virtually all sonogram tech schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Brewster NY hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the rest of the classes and training may be attended online in your Brewster home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online colleges are frequently more affordable than on campus options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be reduced also. But similarly as with every sonographer school you are looking at, make sure that the online program you choose is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the right option for you.

Questions to ask Brewster NY ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Brewster NY area. Naturally location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional factors that you must also take into account, such as if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are several questions that you need ask each sonographer school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound technician schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous review of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Brewster NY employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound tech programs you are interested in have partnerships with Brewster NY hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific manner to receive hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may assist students and graduates form professional connections in the Brewster health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with New York healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Brewster NY home. Students who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Brewster NY area, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.

    Brewster, New York

Brewster is a village within the town of Southeast in Putnam County, New York, United States. Its population was 2,390 at the 2010 census. The village, which is the most densely populated portion of the county, was named for two early farmer landowners, Walter and James Brewster.[2]

The village of Brewster derives its name from that of the landowner, Walter Brewster, who invited the New York and Harlem Railroad to build a depot on his property. Brewster's Station, New York (sometimes just "Brewster's"), appeared on maps,[3] on postcards, and in directories of Putnam County throughout the second half of the 19th century. It was officially incorporated as the Village of Brewster, New York, in 1894.

In 1886, historian William Smith Pelletreau published The History of Putnam County, New York. In his second chapter on the town of Southeast, he wrote: "The land now [1886] embraced within the limits of the village of Brewster consists of a farm which was sold by the commissioners of forfeiture to Peleg Bailey, in 1781. A portion of it afterward passed into the possession of Bailey Howes, his grandson, who sold 98 acres to Gilbert Bailey on April 1, 1833. Two other tracts containing 39 acres were sold to Gilbert Bailey, by William P. Downs and Frederick Parks in 1838. On the 17th of February, 1848, Gilbert Bailey sold the whole tracts, estimated at 134 acres, to James and Walter F. Brewster, for the sum of $8,000."[4]
