Ultrasound Technician Work Description

Bayville NY ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Bayville NY clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work functions of an ultrasound tech can consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

Bayville NY ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally require about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another option for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many colleges sponsor through Bayville NY clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in New York or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Bayville NYAs aforementioned, nearly all ultrasound technician schools have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Bayville NY hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the balance of the classes and training can be attended online in your Bayville home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online programs are many times more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be decreased as well. But similarly as with any sonography school you are looking at, confirm that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the right option for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Bayville NY ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Bayville NY area. Naturally location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. But there are other things that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Bayville NY health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the sonogram technician programs you are reviewing have associations with Bayville NY hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to receive practical experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Bayville medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Find out if the sonographer programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with New York healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Bayville NY home. Those who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  college you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Bayville NY area, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
