Sonographer Work Description

Avoca NY ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Avoca NY hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily job functions of a sonogram tech can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Offered

Avoca NY ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally require about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many schools organize with Avoca NY hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in New York or whichever state you decide to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Classes

student attending online sonography class in Avoca NYAs aforementioned, almost all sonogram tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off campus facility. Clinical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Avoca NY outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the balance of the classes and training can be attended online in your Avoca home. This is especially convenient for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are frequently more affordable than on campus options. Costs for commuting and study materials can be reduced also. But just as with every ultrasound tech school you are considering, make sure that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Avoca NY ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Avoca NY area. Certainly location will be important if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional variables that you must also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound tech schools have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous examination of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Avoca NY health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the ultrasound tech colleges you are assessing have relationships with Avoca NY hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to receive hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Avoca healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with New York healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they select will need to be within travelling distance of their Avoca NY home. Those who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Avoca NY area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
