Sonographer Work Summary

Peralta NM ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Peralta NM hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily work functions of an ultrasound tech may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Offered

Peralta NM ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finish. Another alternative for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools organize with Peralta NM hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in New Mexico or whichever state you choose to work in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Schools

student attending online sonography class in Peralta NMAs aforementioned, nearly all ultrasound tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus facility. Practical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Peralta NM outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the rest of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Peralta home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online colleges are frequently less costly than traditional options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be lessened as well. But similarly as with any sonographer college you are reviewing, confirm that the online program you select is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the right option for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Peralta NM ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician schools. You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Peralta NM area. Obviously location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are other factors that you must also take into consideration, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Peralta NM employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Find out if the ultrasound tech colleges you are interested in have relationships with Peralta NM hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to obtain hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist graduates and students develop professional connections in the Peralta healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Find out if the sonographer programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with New Mexico healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they select will have to be within driving distance of their Peralta NM home. Those who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Peralta NM area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
