Ultrasound Technician Job Summary

Cannon Afb NM ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Cannon Afb NM clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily job functions of a sonogram tech may include:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Offered

Cannon Afb NM ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take about 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that the majority of sonographer colleges do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many schools organize with Cannon Afb NM clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in New Mexico or whatever state you decide to work in.

Sonogram Tech Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Cannon Afb NMAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram tech colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at an approved off-campus facility. Clinical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Cannon Afb NM outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the balance of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Cannon Afb home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times less expensive than traditional alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting can be reduced as well. But similarly as with every sonographer school you are looking at, confirm that the online program you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Cannon Afb NM ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You may first want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Cannon Afb NM area. Clearly location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification as well. But there are other factors that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? Most sonogram technician schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Cannon Afb NM health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Find out if the sonogram technician programs you are reviewing have partnerships with Cannon Afb NM clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to obtain hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Cannon Afb healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with New Mexico healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they pick will need to be within driving distance of their Cannon Afb NM home. Individuals who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Cannon Afb NM area, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
