Sonographer Occupation Description

Bosque Farms NM ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Bosque Farms NM clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job duties of an ultrasound tech can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must routinely assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Offered

Bosque Farms NM ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to complete. Another alternative for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that almost all sonographer colleges do have a practical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous schools organize with Bosque Farms NM clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in New Mexico or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Online Sonographer Schools

student attending online sonography class in Bosque Farms NMAs aforementioned, almost all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Bosque Farms NM outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the balance of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Bosque Farms home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are frequently less costly than traditional options. Costs for study materials and commuting may be decreased also. But just as with any sonographer college you are reviewing, make sure that the online school you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Tech Schools

Questions to ask Bosque Farms NM ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of assessing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Bosque Farms NM area. Certainly location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are other variables that you must also take into account, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound technician schools have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Bosque Farms NM health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the ultrasound technician schools you are reviewing have associations with Bosque Farms NM clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to obtain hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Bosque Farms health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with New Mexico healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they decide on will have to be within commuting distance of their Bosque Farms NM residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Bosque Farms NM area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
