Vienna NJ sonographer performing ultrasoundNow that you have made a decision to obtain an ultrasound technician degree near Vienna NJ, it’s time to start the procedure of choosing a school. First, you must find the ideal program that will provide the proper training to become a skilled professional. And because some states do mandate that ultrasound techs be either licensed or certified, depending on your residence you may also need to be prepared to pass a licensing or certification exam. So it’s very important that you research each college in order to evaluate and compare your options. But exactly where does one start? Many prospective students will begin by looking for schools that are within commuting distance of their homes and then by comparing tuition. Naturally location and cost need to be considered when making a decision, but there are additional important factors as well. For instance, if the ultrasound technician schools have earned accreditation or if they sponsor internships. These and other qualifiers will be covered more in depth later in this post. But to start with, let’s review what a sonogram tech does and the credentials and online education options that are available.

Ultrasound Technician Work Summary

Vienna NJ ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Vienna NJ clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily job duties of a sonogram technician may include:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

Vienna NJ ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require about 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to complete. Another option for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that almost all sonographer programs do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous schools sponsor with Vienna NJ clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in New Jersey or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Sonogram Tech Online Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Vienna NJAs aforementioned, almost all ultrasound tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Vienna NJ outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the rest of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Vienna home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online programs are many times more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting may be reduced also. But just as with any ultrasound tech college you are reviewing, confirm that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

Questions to ask Vienna NJ ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Vienna NJ area. Certainly location will be significant if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are other things that you should also take into account, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous review of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Vienna NJ employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the sonogram tech schools you are interested in have relationships with Vienna NJ clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific manner to receive hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Vienna health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with New Jersey healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they decide on will need to be within commuting distance of their Vienna NJ home. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  school you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Vienna NJ area, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
