Ultrasound Technician Work Summary

Somerdale NJ ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Somerdale NJ clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job functions of a sonogram tech can involve:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must regularly evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many colleges sponsor with Somerdale NJ clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in New Jersey or whatever state you decide to work in.

Clinical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Somerdale NJ outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the rest of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Somerdale home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online programs are often less costly than on-campus alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials can be decreased also. But just as with any sonographer college you are looking at, verify that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

Questions to ask Somerdale NJ ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Somerdale NJ area. Of course location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional variables that you must also take into account, such as if the programs are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are several questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? Most sonogram technician colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Somerdale NJ employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the sonogram tech programs you are evaluating have relationships with Somerdale NJ hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent means to receive hands on training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may assist graduates and students develop professional connections in the Somerdale health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with New Jersey healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they decide on will have to be within travelling distance of their Somerdale NJ home. Students who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  program you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Somerdale NJ area, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
