Ultrasound Tech Occupation Description

Sewaren NJ ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Sewaren NJ hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily work duties of a sonogram technician may include:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Available

Sewaren NJ ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve around 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that most ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor through Sewaren NJ clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in New Jersey or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Sewaren NJAs earlier discussed, virtually all sonogram tech schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus facility. Clinical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Sewaren NJ hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the rest of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Sewaren home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online schools are many times less costly than on campus options. Costs for commuting and study materials may be reduced as well. But similarly as with every sonographer college you are reviewing, make sure that the online program you choose is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the right option for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Sewaren NJ ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Sewaren NJ area. Of course location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional variables that you must also take into consideration, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you need ask each sonography college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed review of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Sewaren NJ employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Find out if the ultrasound technician programs you are evaluating have relationships with Sewaren NJ hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to obtain practical training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist graduates and students develop professional connections in the Sewaren medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Ask if the sonographer programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with New Jersey healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they choose will need to be within commuting distance of their Sewaren NJ home. Those who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  school you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Sewaren NJ area, make sure that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
