Ultrasound Tech Job Summary

Port Monmouth NJ ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Port Monmouth NJ hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job functions of a sonogram tech can include:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Offered

Port Monmouth NJ ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take around 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to complete. Another option for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that almost all sonographer schools do have a clinical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many colleges organize through Port Monmouth NJ hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in New Jersey or whichever state you choose to work in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Port Monmouth NJAs aforementioned, virtually all ultrasound technician colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Port Monmouth NJ outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the balance of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Port Monmouth home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online schools are many times more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting may be decreased as well. But similarly as with every sonography program you are reviewing, check that the online school you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Port Monmouth NJ ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Port Monmouth NJ area. Of course location will be significant if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional things that you should also take into consideration, such as if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Port Monmouth NJ employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the ultrasound tech programs you are evaluating have relationships with Port Monmouth NJ hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to get hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist graduates and students establish professional connections in the Port Monmouth healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with New Jersey healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they select will need to be within commuting distance of their Port Monmouth NJ home. Those who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you finally pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Port Monmouth NJ area, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
