Pemberton NJ sonographer performing ultrasoundOnce you have made a decision to pursue an ultrasound technician degree near Pemberton NJ, the next step is to start the process of picking a college. To begin with, you need to find the ideal program that will provide the appropriate education to become a skilled professional. And given that a number of states do mandate that sonographers be either licensed or certified, depending on your residence you may also need to be prepared to pass a certification or licensing examination. So it’s extremely important that you research each program so that you can assess and compare your alternatives. But just where does one start? Many individuals will begin by looking for schools that are within travelling distance of their residences and then by comparing tuition. Naturally location and cost must be taken into account when arriving at a decision, but there are additional critical factors also. For example, if the ultrasound technician schools have earned accreditation or if they offer internship programs. These and additional qualifiers will be addressed more in depth later in this post. But first, let’s go over what a sonogram tech does and the credentials and online training programs that are available.

Ultrasound Tech Occupation Description

Pemberton NJ ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Pemberton NJ clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job functions of a sonogram tech may involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Available

Pemberton NJ ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that most sonographer colleges do have a clinical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many schools set up with Pemberton NJ clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in New Jersey or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Online Sonographer Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Pemberton NJAs earlier discussed, virtually all sonogram tech schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Pemberton NJ hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the remainder of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Pemberton home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are frequently more affordable than on campus alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be reduced also. But just as with every sonography school you are considering, check that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Pemberton NJ ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Pemberton NJ area. Clearly location will be important if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are other things that you must also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? Most sonogram technician colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Pemberton NJ health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the sonogram tech programs you are interested in have relationships with Pemberton NJ hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to obtain hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist students and graduates develop professional connections in the Pemberton medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Ask if the sonographer programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with New Jersey healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will have to be within travelling distance of their Pemberton NJ home. Those who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  school you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Pemberton NJ area, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
