Sonographer Job Summary

Morganville NJ ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Morganville NJ clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job duties of an ultrasound technician can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Available

Morganville NJ ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that most sonographer schools do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous schools set up with Morganville NJ clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in New Jersey or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Programs

student attending online sonography class in Morganville NJAs previously mentioned, almost all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an approved off campus facility. Practical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Morganville NJ outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the remainder of the classes and training can be attended online in your Morganville home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are often more affordable than on campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting may be lessened as well. But similarly as with any sonographer program you are looking at, verify that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the right option for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Tech Schools

Questions to ask Morganville NJ ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Morganville NJ area. Obviously location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional things that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? Most sonogram tech schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed review of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Morganville NJ employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound technician schools you are assessing have associations with Morganville NJ clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to obtain hands on training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist students and graduates form professional connections in the Morganville health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with New Jersey healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they decide on will need to be within commuting distance of their Morganville NJ residence. Those who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  school you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Morganville NJ area, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.
