Sonographer Occupation Summary

Millburn NJ ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While many work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Millburn NJ hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work functions of an ultrasound tech may include:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Offered

Millburn NJ ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take about 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to complete. Another alternative for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that most sonographer programs do have a practical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many schools organize with Millburn NJ hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in New Jersey or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Online Sonographer Programs

student attending online sonography class in Millburn NJAs earlier discussed, nearly all ultrasound tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Practical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Millburn NJ outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the balance of the classes and training may be attended online in your Millburn home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online programs are frequently less expensive than on-campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting may be lessened as well. But just as with every ultrasound tech program you are looking at, verify that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the right option for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

Questions to ask Millburn NJ ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Millburn NJ area. Clearly location will be important if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are other factors that you should also take into consideration, such as if the programs are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still crucial to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Millburn NJ employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the sonogram technician schools you are interested in have relationships with Millburn NJ clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific manner to obtain hands on training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Millburn medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with New Jersey healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they pick will have to be within driving distance of their Millburn NJ residence. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  school you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Millburn NJ area, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.

    Millburn, New Jersey

Millburn is a suburban township in Essex County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the township's population was 20,149,[9][10][11] reflecting an increase of 384 (+1.9%) from the 19,765 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn increased by 1,135 (+6.1%) from the 18,630 counted in the 1990 Census.[23]

Millburn was created as a township by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 20, 1857, from portions of Springfield Township, when Union County was formed.[24] Earlier known variously as Milltown, Millville, Rum Brook and Vauxhall, the name "Millburn" was adopted before the township was established. The township's name derives from the burn (Scottish for a stream) that powered mills in the area.[25][26]

Millburn had the highest annual property tax bills in the U.S. state of New Jersey in 2009 at $19,097, compared to the statewide average of $7,300 that year, which was the highest in the United States.[28] This is primarily a function of high property values, as Millburn had the lowest effective property tax rate in 2014 (1.9%) among the 22 municipalities in Essex County.[29]
