Ultrasound Tech Job Summary

Merchantville NJ ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Merchantville NJ hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily work tasks of a sonogram tech can include:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Offered

Merchantville NJ ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to complete. Another option for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that almost all sonographer programs do have a practical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many schools sponsor through Merchantville NJ hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in New Jersey or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Classes

student attending online sonography class in Merchantville NJAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound technician schools have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at an approved off-campus facility. Practical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Merchantville NJ outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the balance of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Merchantville home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online programs are many times less expensive than on campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But similarly as with every sonographer school you are looking at, verify that the online school you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the right option for you.

Questions to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Merchantville NJ ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Merchantville NJ area. Clearly location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional things that you must also take into consideration, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? Most sonogram tech schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Merchantville NJ employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the ultrasound tech schools you are evaluating have partnerships with Merchantville NJ hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to receive practical experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Merchantville medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with New Jersey healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they choose will have to be within travelling distance of their Merchantville NJ home. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the sonographer  program you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Merchantville NJ area, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
