Sonogram Tech Work Summary

Mantua NJ ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Mantua NJ hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work duties of an ultrasound tech may include:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Offered

Mantua NJ ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve around 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finish. Another option for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that almost all ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous schools set up through Mantua NJ hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in New Jersey or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Sonogram Tech Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Mantua NJAs aforementioned, almost all sonogram tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an authorized off-campus facility. Practical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Mantua NJ outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the rest of the training and classes can be attended online in your Mantua home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online programs are frequently more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be lessened also. But similarly as with any sonography college you are considering, verify that the online program you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Mantua NJ ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Mantua NJ area. Obviously location will be important if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification as well. But there are other variables that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are several questions that you need ask each sonographer college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? Most ultrasound technician schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous review of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Mantua NJ health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the ultrasound technician colleges you are interested in have associations with Mantua NJ hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Mantua health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with New Jersey healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Mantua NJ home. Students who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Mantua NJ area, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
