Sonogram Tech Job Description

Ewan NJ ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Ewan NJ clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job duties of a sonogram technician may include:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for further testing

Sonographers must regularly gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Ewan NJ ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take around 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that most sonographer programs do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many schools sponsor with Ewan NJ hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in New Jersey or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Ewan NJAs aforementioned, nearly all sonogram tech schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Ewan NJ outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the rest of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Ewan home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online colleges are frequently less expensive than on campus alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be reduced also. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech college you are reviewing, confirm that the online school you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the right option for you.

Points to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Ewan NJ ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Ewan NJ area. Clearly location will be important if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier also. But there are additional variables that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed review of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Ewan NJ health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound tech programs you are evaluating have associations with Ewan NJ hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to receive hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Ewan health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with New Jersey healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they choose will need to be within commuting distance of their Ewan NJ residence. Students who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you finally pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Ewan NJ area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
