Sonogram Tech Occupation Description

East Brunswick NJ ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in East Brunswick NJ clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work tasks of a sonogram tech can consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

East Brunswick NJ ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that most sonographer schools do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous schools sponsor through East Brunswick NJ clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in New Jersey or whatever state you elect to work in.

Sonogram Tech Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in East Brunswick NJAs aforementioned, nearly all sonogram tech schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local East Brunswick NJ outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the remainder of the classes and training can be accessed online in your East Brunswick home. This is especially beneficial for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online schools are frequently more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials may be decreased also. But similarly as with every sonography school you are considering, confirm that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask East Brunswick NJ ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the East Brunswick NJ area. Naturally location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional variables that you must also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive examination of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous East Brunswick NJ health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the sonogram tech colleges you are interested in have associations with East Brunswick NJ hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to get hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional connections in the East Brunswick medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with New Jersey healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they select will need to be within driving distance of their East Brunswick NJ home. Students who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  program you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the East Brunswick NJ area, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
