Carteret NJ sonographer performing ultrasoundNow that you have made a decision to obtain an ultrasound technician degree near Carteret NJ, the next step is to start the procedure of selecting a school. First, you must find the right program that will furnish the necessary education to become a skilled professional. And because a number of states do mandate that ultrasound techs be either licensed or certified, depending on where you will practice you may also need preparation to pass a licensing or certification examination. So it’s extremely important that you investigate each school in order to evaluate and compare your options. But exactly where does one start? A number of individuals will begin by looking for colleges that are within travelling distance of their homes and then by comparing tuition. Naturally cost and location need to be taken into account when arriving at a decision, but there are additional important factors also. For example, if the ultrasound technician schools are accredited or if they provide internships. These and additional qualifiers will be covered more in detail later in this post. But first, let’s review what a sonogram tech does and the degrees and online education options that are available.

Sonogram Tech Job Description

Carteret NJ ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Carteret NJ clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily work tasks of an ultrasound technician may include:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for further testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

Carteret NJ ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finalize. Another option for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that most ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools set up with Carteret NJ clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in New Jersey or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Sonographer Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Carteret NJAs earlier discussed, nearly all ultrasound tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus facility. Clinical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Carteret NJ hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the balance of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Carteret home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online colleges are often less costly than traditional options. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be reduced also. But similarly as with every sonographer school you are considering, confirm that the online program you choose is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Carteret NJ ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Carteret NJ area. Certainly location will be significant if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification also. But there are other things that you must also take into account, such as if the schools are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Carteret NJ employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the sonogram technician programs you are assessing have associations with Carteret NJ clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to receive practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist graduates and students establish professional connections in the Carteret healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Ask if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with New Jersey healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they pick will have to be within driving distance of their Carteret NJ home. Students who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Carteret NJ area, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
