Sonogram Tech Job Description

Browns Mills NJ ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Browns Mills NJ hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work functions of a sonogram tech may include:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must frequently evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Offered

Browns Mills NJ ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require around 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finalize. Another option for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that most ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges organize through Browns Mills NJ hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in New Jersey or whichever state you elect to work in.

Online Sonographer Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Browns Mills NJAs aforementioned, almost all sonogram tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus facility. Clinical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Browns Mills NJ outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the balance of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Browns Mills home. This is especially beneficial for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online programs are often less expensive than on-campus alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be decreased also. But similarly as with every sonographer school you are considering, verify that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Browns Mills NJ ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Browns Mills NJ area. Of course location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other things that you must also take into consideration, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? Most sonogram tech colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Browns Mills NJ employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the sonogram technician colleges you are evaluating have partnerships with Browns Mills NJ clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent means to receive hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may assist graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Browns Mills healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with New Jersey healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they pick will need to be within driving distance of their Browns Mills NJ residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Browns Mills NJ area, confirm that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.
