Sonogram Tech Work Description

Bridgeton NJ ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Bridgeton NJ hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job tasks of an ultrasound tech can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Available

Bridgeton NJ ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require around 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that the majority of sonographer schools do have a practical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many colleges organize through Bridgeton NJ clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in New Jersey or whatever state you decide to work in.

Sonogram Tech Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Bridgeton NJAs aforementioned, almost all sonogram tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Bridgeton NJ hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the remainder of the classes and training can be attended online in your Bridgeton home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are many times less costly than on campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be reduced also. But just as with every sonography college you are looking at, confirm that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the right option for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Bridgeton NJ ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Bridgeton NJ area. Clearly location will be important if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier also. But there are other variables that you must also take into account, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are several questions that you need ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician schools have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous examination of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Bridgeton NJ employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the sonogram technician schools you are interested in have partnerships with Bridgeton NJ clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to get practical training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Bridgeton medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with New Jersey healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they select will have to be within travelling distance of their Bridgeton NJ residence. Students who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  school you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Bridgeton NJ area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.

    Bridgeton, New Jersey

Bridgeton is a city in Cumberland County, New Jersey, United States, in the southern part of the state, on the Cohansey River, near Delaware Bay. As of the 2010 United States Census, the city's population was 25,349,[9][10][11] reflecting an increase of 2,578 (+11.3%) from the 22,771 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn increased by 3,829 (+20.2%) from the 18,942 counted in the 1990 Census.[20] It is the county seat of Cumberland County.[21] Bridgeton, Millville, and Vineland are the three principal cities of the Vineland-Millville-Bridgeton Primary Metropolitan Statistical Area, which encompasses those cities and all of Cumberland County for statistical purposes and which constitutes a part of the Delaware Valley.

Similar to other areas near rivers and the bay, this area was inhabited for thousands of years by indigenous peoples. At the time of European contact, Lenni-Lenape Native Americans lived in the area, following a seasonal pattern of cultivation and hunting and fishing. The state-recognized Nanticoke Lenni-Lenape Indians of New Jersey maintain a cultural center here, serving a community of 12,000 in Cumberland, Gloucester and Salem counties.[22]

The first recorded European settlement in what is now Bridgeton was made by 1686 when Richard Hancock established a sawmill here.[23] Settlers established a pioneer iron-works in 1814. Bridgeton was incorporated as a township by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 3, 1845, from portions of Deerfield Township. Bridgeton city was incorporated on March 1, 1865, replacing both Bridgeton Township and Cohansey Township.[24] The city was named for its location at a bridge on the Cohansey River[25] and is said to be a corruption of "bridge town".[26]
