So it’s very important that you research each college so that you can evaluate and compare your choices. But exactly where does one begin? Most individuals will start by looking for schools that are within travelling distance of their homes and then by comparing tuition. Certainly cost and location must be considered when arriving at a decision, but there are additional critical factors also. Ultrasound Technician Job Description

Atlantic Highlands NJ ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Atlantic Highlands NJ hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily work duties of an ultrasound tech can consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Offered

Atlantic Highlands NJ ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve around 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finish. Another option for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that most sonographer schools do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many schools set up through Atlantic Highlands NJ clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in New Jersey or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Sonogram Tech Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Atlantic Highlands NJAs aforementioned, nearly all sonogram tech schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off campus facility. Practical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Atlantic Highlands NJ hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the rest of the classes and training may be attended online in your Atlantic Highlands home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online schools are frequently less costly than on campus alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be lessened as well. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech school you are reviewing, confirm that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Atlantic Highlands NJ ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Atlantic Highlands NJ area. Certainly location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are other factors that you must also take into account, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are several questions that you need ask each sonography program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Atlantic Highlands NJ employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the sonogram technician colleges you are interested in have relationships with Atlantic Highlands NJ hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to receive practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional connections in the Atlantic Highlands health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without help. Find out if the sonographer programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with New Jersey healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Atlantic Highlands NJ home. Students who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  school you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Atlantic Highlands NJ area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
