Ultrasound Tech Occupation Summary

Alloway NJ ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Alloway NJ clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily job tasks of a sonogram technician may include:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must frequently assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Available

Alloway NJ ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve around 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finish. Another option for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that the majority of sonographer schools do have a clinical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools set up through Alloway NJ clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in New Jersey or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Alloway NJAs aforementioned, nearly all sonogram tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off-campus facility. Practical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Alloway NJ hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the rest of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Alloway home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online colleges are frequently less expensive than on-campus options. Costs for commuting and study materials may be lessened also. But similarly as with any sonography school you are reviewing, verify that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Alloway NJ ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Alloway NJ area. Obviously location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier also. But there are other factors that you must also take into consideration, such as if the schools are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Alloway NJ employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the sonogram tech schools you are reviewing have relationships with Alloway NJ hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to obtain practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Alloway healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with New Jersey healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the college they pick will have to be within commuting distance of their Alloway NJ residence. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  college you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Alloway NJ area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
