Ultrasound Tech Work Description

Henniker NH ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Henniker NH hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily job tasks of an ultrasound technician may consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for further testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Offered

Henniker NH ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to complete. Another option for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that almost all sonographer colleges do have a clinical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many schools set up with Henniker NH clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in New Hampshire or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Online Sonographer Schools

student attending online sonography class in Henniker NHAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound technician colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus facility. Practical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Henniker NH hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the rest of the classes and training may be attended online in your Henniker home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online programs are many times less costly than on campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting can be decreased as well. But just as with every ultrasound tech school you are looking at, confirm that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to ask Henniker NH ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Henniker NH area. Of course location will be important if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier also. But there are additional variables that you must also take into account, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? Most sonogram technician colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Henniker NH employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the sonogram technician colleges you are reviewing have relationships with Henniker NH clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific manner to obtain practical training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may assist graduates and students form professional connections in the Henniker medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be challenging without support. Ask if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with New Hampshire healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they pick will need to be within travelling distance of their Henniker NH home. Students who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Henniker NH area, verify that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
